  • SF & PSNI 4evr (Sinn Fein support policing)

    Sunday, January 28th, 2007

The news has broken across the various media outlets that the Extraordinary Sinn Fein Ard Fheis on policing has wrapped up with a ‘yes’ from delegates on supporting the PSNI and Garda Siochana.

Some interesting bits from the news reports - RTÉ says:

It was passed following a series of amendments, which Sinn Féin said would enhance the proposal.

Will be interesting to see what these amendments are and how the various parties react to them.

    BBC News says:

A six hour debate was cut short as the leadership forced a vote which was carried with almost unanimous support.

We all assumed the vote was going to be carried, but the extent of the support for it was up in the air. So it seems there has been no 1986-type walkout, and no major dissent. Vincent Browne reckons it’s because the IRA are conducting their unique form of crowd control.

As far as Northern Irish politics go, the next week or two should be mighty interesting. Not only will the NI Assembly now be dissolved to make way for the upcoming election, but the likes of the DUP will also have to make their minds up to see if SF’s actions today are enough… failing to do so could risk the eventual collapse of government lying at their door…
