RTÉ and the colours of the Lebanese enemy
Wednesday, August 16th, 2006Ullu on boards.ie pointed it out and the VoD clip from RTÉ.ie (launches realplayer) confirms it, RTÉ’s reporter in South Lebanon, Tony Connelly is brandishing a slightly different mic to the rest of the RTÉ crew, namely his colleague Richard Crowley in Haifa.
The difference is this; Crowley has the standard RTÉ microphone which has one of those plastic blocks featuring the broadcasters logo. Connelly was without the plastic block and instead had a green foam windshield with RTÉ on it.
This may seem insignificant until you look at the colours of the RTÉ logo, which are blue text on white (with a touch of green). It seems that RTÉ reporters in Lebanon are walking on the side of caution; walking around an area of South Lebanon that is now more pro-Hezbullah, anti-Israel than ever with a blue and white logo probably isn’t the greatest idea. Doing so could potentially make you out to be a member of the Israeli press and at the very least a figure of hatred as a result. It seems they decided that good auld green was the safest bet of all (besides, it’s in the Lebanese flag too).
Update: Thanks to Aaron for the screencap; below you’ll see the regular RTÉ logo and colours used in the normal mic, followed by the green windbreaker being used in Lebanese territories at the minute (I’m still having trouble taking my own screencap, so this is the best I can do!)

I’ve sent you a screen grab via yousendit to your email address.
The trick to taking screen grabs from Real Player is to turn off hardward acceleration in preferences, then use the trusty ‘print screen’ button.

Thanks for that Aaron; can’t find anything about hardware accelerations in RealPlayer; I hate that bloody format…

in my version of RealPlayer..
go to Tools >> Preferences
select hardware
look at the ‘video card compatibility’ option
make sure the slider is in the middle between ‘most reliable’ and ‘best performance’

I don’t think you can read too much into the colours, as if you look, on the same screen, you can see that the RTÉ logo is white (on a blue background) Even all the idents on both TV channels have the RTÉ logo in white.
Perhaps its the new windshield for the revamp?

But the colours of RTÉ and RTÉ News are white and blue primarily… this might be a new RTÉ logo but from the clues shown in the autumn schedual video that’s going to be white and brown…
